Eritrea: Catholic bishops dare to criticize regime : News Headlines - Catholic Culture
Catholic World News - June 09, 2014
The Catholic bishops of Eritrea have released a lengthy statement on their country’s difficulties, criticizing the repressive government.
In a rare public expression of discontent with government policies, the bishops remark that the high rate of emigration is a clear sign of trouble. Those who leave are traveling to “peaceful countries, to countries of justice, of work, where one expresses himself loudly, a country where one works and earns,” the bishops say.
Also commenting on the high rate of incarceration, the bishops say that “all those who are arrested should first be handled humanely and sympathetically.” Human-rights advocates have cited Eritrea for frequent violations of prisoners’ rights.
